Introduction to Sewing

Introduction to Sewing

Always wanted to learn to sew? This beginner's course shows you all the important basics. While learning to use a sewing machine and an overlocker, students create samples to use as a reference. In the final lesson, students cut out their own skirt in calico to fit and create a customised pattern, this skirt will be completed in the next course, 'Start to Sew 1'.

This course is recommended for those who have never sewn or have not sewn for a while.

Material requirements -This course includes a sample workbook, calico and a beginners sewing kit comprising scissors, thread, chalk, ruler, pins and needles etc.

Start to Sew 1

Start to Sew 1

In this course, students complete a calico skirt known as a toile. The toile teaches students about their body shape. Students are then taught to alter the commercial pattern for a perfect fit. The customised pattern will then be constructed in the students own fabric. After twenty hours of tuition, students have developed sound skills and are equipped to move on to the next course, 'Start to Sew 2'.

Material requirements - students to provide all materials and a sewing kit.

Start to Sew 2

Start to Sew 2

In this course, the focus is on understanding the pattern guide sheet instructions. Students purchase a pattern of their choice and whilst making the garment, gain a fuller understanding of the symbols, language and methods used in constructing a garment through the support of their pattern guide sheet. Textiles, pattern and fabric selection and tools of the trade will be discussed throughout the course.

Material requirements - students to provide all materials and a sewing kit.

Garment Construction

Garment Construction

Student's who have completed the Start to Sew 2 course, move on to Garment Construction. The aim of this course and all further study is for students to be exposed to the different elements that make up a garment, for example a collar and sleeves on a shirt or pockets in pants. Students will construct a garment of their choice. It is advised that students trial their pattern in calico.

Please note: If you are an experienced sewer, you are welcome to enrol in this course.

Material requirements - students to provide all materials and a sewing kit.

One Day Sewing Workshops

Come and join a one day sewing workshop. This workshop has been developed for anyone who just loves to sew. Personally I can’t think of anything nicer than spending a whole day immersed in a sewing project while meeting like minded people. The workshop runs from 10am – 3pm and includes a 30 minute lunch break.

Suggested Projects – Garment construction, sewing with knit fabrics, cushion making and bag making.

Suggested Patterns – Style Arc – Maddison top, Freya knit tunic, Fifi woven pant, Iris woven dress.
Helen’s Closet – Blackwood knit cardigan
True Bias – Sutton blouse

Material requirements – If you are making a bag, cushion or a knit garment to save time on the day I recommend that you prepare your sewing project. Pre cut and mark all pieces and apply interfacing if required. For those making a woven garment I recommend cutting the pattern out in calico and sewing it up ready for a fitting. Students to provide all materials.

Machine and tool requirements – Sewing machines and overlockers are available for students to use, you are welcome to bring your own sewing machine. Students to provide a sewing kit.
